Short term car insurance gives you the option of insuring
a car or light van for any period between just one single
day up to 28 days maximum (there is also a month by month
policy available for between one month and eight months,
details available
here). A short term policy is very simple to apply for
and you can get a quotation very quickly but you need to be
at least 21 with no accidents in the last three years and
have a reasonably clean licence; qualifications do change
regularly as they do with all types of insurance policy
these days and "old bangers" worth less than £1500 or
expensive cars worth more than about £35,000 may be
difficult to cover but the majority of reasonably careful
drivers with a fairly modern car or light van should face no
problems.
Policies
are usually available for both fully comprehensive and third
party only cover and, like most conventional policies, the
extra that is charged for comprehensive cover may be
considered by many people to be very reasonable because the
biggest expense that car insurance companies face is not so
much repairing their clients' cars but paying for the damage
to other property and, much worse, other people in the event
of an accident. European cover is often included as standard
but beware: even if you have a comprehensive policy this
usually relates only to driving in he UK whilst travel in
the EU is restricted to the minimum required by law. There
is, however, usually an option to upgrade to fully
comprehensive European cover for an extra premium. Roadside
assistance can usually be offered as an extra too, both in
the UK and Europe.
One very
popular aspect of short term car insurance is that
policy documents can be downloaded immediately the
transaction has been concluded and printed out on your own
home or office printer; these should be sufficient to prove
that the car is insured for the purposes of buying a tax
disc. If the post office staff refuse to accept them - which
they shouldn't, it is now government policy to accept
downloaded documents - you can normally ask for a
proper hologrammed cover note to be posted to you for a
small extra charge. You should of course be able to tax your
car online or by telephone but although insurance companies
usually inform the DVLA of insurance changes quite promptly
the latter is not alas so efficient at updating it's
database.
